Springstead, NM – Every year my family host what we call a “Shoegame”, in the Diné language it’s called “Keshjéé”. I remember the first time I ever seen this being played. I was probably about 5 years old, we use live in a small hogan in Pinedale, NM. My dad was showing my aunts how to play, we just watched and saw all the fun they were having.

It was about 1996, when we started following my dad to a small place in Red Rock, called Uprooted tree. My dad would tell us to hold the blanket for him, while he hid the yucca ball and sang different songs. As the years past we learned more about the game, the songs, the rules, and most importantly the need to keep this Diné tradition going.
Tonight is a special night, it is Christmas Eve. Many families across the world are celebrating Christmas as a religious event. We here in good old Springstead celebrate by playing Shoegame. Tonight we have the honor to have many families come out and spend the evening and night with us.
As I reminisce about the good old days, I can still picture the elders and those who have went back to the spririt world sing songs and laugh, all while enjoying each otherʼs company. I have so much to share, but for another day. For now Happy Holidays and enjoy your night.
