Navajo Nation Council removes Same-sex bill back to Committee

Window Rock, Arizona – In a stunning move the 25th Navajo Nation Council approved to move back Navajo Nation Legislation No. 0139-23 A Act Relating to the Health, Education and Human Services, Law and Order, Budget and Finance, and Naabik’iyati Committees and the Navajo Nation Council; Repealing 9 N.N.C. Section 2(C) of the Dine Marriage Act of 2005, to Uniformly Recognize All Marriages Within the Navajo Nation; and Amending Other Provisions in Title 9 of the Navajo Nation Code Related to Marriage Within the Navajo Nation to the Naabik’iyati Committee for further deliberation.

Sponsor of the legislation the Honorable Eugenia Charles-Newton motion to move the legislation back to the Naabik’iyati Committee. The Council approved the motion with a 22-1-1 vote, with the Honorable Germaine Simonson (Hard Rock, Forest Lake, Pinon, Black Mesa, and Whippoorwill). ##
